Make it FUN! Three Ways to Incentivize Physical Activity

In today’s technology-rich world, parents need to be creative when it comes to getting children to engage in physical activity. It is recommended that children get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day, but sometimes it’s a challenge to get kids off the tablet, game console, phone, or whatever other device holding their attention. To help make physical activity more interesting, here are three ways to incentivize physical activity:

  1. Kids spell love T-I-M-E: Use family-based activities as ways to engage your child in physical activity. Whether it’s a structured family workout or playing games at the local park, kids feel loved when they spend time with their parents.

  2. Build them up: Using words of affirmation and positive reinforcement can help get kids more physically active. Kids want to be praised for their actions. Let them know that they are doing a good job and be specific with your affirmations. For example, compliment on how well they are holding a plank or performing a squat. Use words like: “That is an awesome squat. I like how your heels are down and your knees are over your toes.” These not only help to reinforce proper technique, but the praise makes your child want to do them even more.

  3. Make it FUN: No matter the physical activity, it has to be FUN! Kids will want to engage in activities that are stimulating and fun to do. For example, most kids love obstacle courses. Create your own obstacle course at home and put some fun twists in it. Also, pay attention to your child’s interest. Do things that they enjoy and think are fun.
